DetailsRome, the Eternal City – more than 2,000 years of glorious history and an unparalleled culture centered around the Capitoline Hill, where the ancient temple of the Supreme God and today the City Hall of Rome are located. The Capitoline Museums on the hill are among the oldest museums in the world. The history of the museum dates back to the Renaissance-era Pope Sixtus IV donating four ancient sculptures to the citizens of Rome. The rich and diverse collection of ancient relics, sculptures from the Vatican, and paintings brought from Rome's prestigious families built on the glory of the ancient Roman Empire and developed into a center of politics, religion, and culture in Europe. It is superimposed on the footsteps of Rome itself.
Focusing on the collection of the Capitoline Museums, this exhibition presents Rome, known as the “Eternal City,” through about 70 sculptures, paintings, prints, etc. from the founding of the country to its ancient glory, from the times of the popes to the modern era. Introduce history and art.
The year 2023 will mark the 150th anniversary of the visit of the Iwakura Mission, dispatched by the Meiji government of Japan, to the Capitoline Museums. The delegation's visit to Europe had a major impact on Japan's policy on museums in the future. In this milestone year, it will be the first opportunity to introduce the museum's collection in Japan, using Rome's sister cities, Tokyo and Fukuoka, as venues.
