Details | What kind of place is a "zoo" for us humans? What do people go there for, and what do they get when they return? Facilities for breeding and publicly exhibiting various animals, now affectionately known as ``zoological gardens'', were born in Europe at the end of the 18th century, and in Japan, the first ``zoological garden'' was established in Ueno in 1882. The zoo has opened. Since then, zoos have opened one after another in various places, and while their nature has changed little by little with the times, they still continue to welcome large numbers of visitors. This exhibition mainly focuses on Japan's oldest "zoo", the Ueno Zoo adjacent to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, but also covers "zoos" kept by Tokyo Metropolitan art museums, other institutions, and individuals. We will exhibit related works and materials. We hope that by walking around and visiting the various fragments of memories hidden in the "zoo," we will have the opportunity to reconsider the relationship between humans and animals in the space of the "zoo" since modern times. |
