DetailsHiguchi Ichiyo tried to support her family with the royalties from her novels, but was unsuccessful, so she gave up writing and moved to Ryusenji-cho, Shitaya, to start a business.
Although she spent just over nine months there running a hardware and candy store, her experiences there inspired her to write her masterpiece, "Takekurabe," and later helped her blossom as a writer.
This exhibition will take a fresh look at how Ichiyo lived in this area, and what she saw and learned.
