DetailsThe Tokyo University of the Arts Bach Cantata Club was founded in 1970 by students from Tokyo University of the Arts who came together with the goal of performing Bach's cantatas. The club began with Michio Kobayashi, who was already establishing himself as a prominent figure in the music world at the time, as conductor, and the late musicologist and musicology instructor Kozo Hattori as advisor. The club subsequently served as advisor to Ichiro Kadokura and Eizaburo Tsuchida, and since 2020, Kinya Osumi. While Michio Kobayashi retired as conductor in March 2005, he continues to exert a significant influence on the club as honorary conductor, and current members continue to receive his guidance at the twice-yearly academy hosted by the alumni association. Currently, almost all performances and operations are student-led, with approximately 70 members, including students from the Vocal and Instrumental Music Departments, as well as the Musicology, Composition, and Fine Arts Departments. In addition to performing approximately five concerts a year, including at the Nikko Mahikari Church in Tochigi and the Shitaya Church in Tokyo, and a regular concert at the Tokyo University of the Arts Concert Hall, the club has recently received acclaim for its commissioned performances, including at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Many of the club's alumni are active in the music world in Japan and around the world, and hold leading positions in early music performance.
