Information | An art gallery in a renovated earth-walled storehouse built in 1868 (the late Edo period) which was used as an internal storehouse of a timber wholesaler in Asakusa. It was renovated by artist volunteers in 1996 and the gallery was opened in April 1997. The building was designated by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as a registered tangible cultural property in 1998, and designated by Taito Ward as a Structure of Landscape Importance in 2018. The solid two-story structure that overcame the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Great Tokyo Air Raid communicates the features of Edo-period buildings to the present day. Coupled with the floor lacquered in black and red, the whole space creates a dignified atmosphere. By collaborating with artists, the gallery presents artwork with spatial flexibility and strong messages, regardless of genre or nationality. |
