Gokokuin, one of the branch temples of Kan-eiji Temple, is also called Ueno Daikokuten because it enshrines Daikokuten. Besides pilgrimages to Yamanote and Mukojima Shichifukujin, a pilgrimage to Yanaka Shichifukujin in January, which consists of Benzaiten, or the Goddess of Eloquence, in Shinobazuno-ike Bentendo, Daikokuten, or the God of Wealth, in Ueno Gokokuin, Bishamonten, or the God of Treasure, in Yanaka Tennoji, Jurojin, or the God of Longevity, in Yanaka Choanji, Hotei, or the God of Contentment, in Nippori Shushoin, Ebisu, or the God of Wealth and Commerce, in Nippori Seiunji, and Fukurokuju, or the God of Wealth and Longevity, in Tabata Tokakuji, has been popular among people since the Edo Period. Buddhist Priest Tenkai praised Ieyasu Tokugawa for his seven virtues that were longevity, wealth, popularity, honesty, attractiveness, authority and moral excellence. Ieyasu commissioned Tanyu Kano, a painter, to depict Shichifukujin. It is said that this is the origin of Shichifukujin. The Shichifukujin depicted by Tanyu got famous among people, and receiving good luck charms, on which a treasure ship bearing Shichifukujin is depicted, from shrines and temples on New Year's Day gained popularity among people throughout the country.
Gokokuin, one of the 36 branch temples of Toeizan Kan-eiji Temple, is also called Shakado. Shakado, built by Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shogun, in 1630, was burnt down in 1717. Later, it was rebuilt in 1722, and has continued to exist. When a grand Buddhist service was held in 1639, Iemitsu presented an image of Daikokuten, which is said to be painted by Nobuzane Fujiwara, to Seijyun, a Buddhist priest of the highest rank and a founder of Gokokuin, praying for protection of the country and good fortune for people. Since then, Gokokuin has enshrined the image, so it has been worshiped as Gokokuin Daikokuten.

Multilayered relics are retained in the building and walls of Gokokuin.

Gokokuin's Daikokuten is one of the so-called Yanaka Shichifukujin, or Yanaka Seven Deities of Good Fortune, which are enshrined at temples in Ueno, Yanaka, Nishi-nippori and Tabata. A pilgrimage to Shichifukujin is held from January 1 to 10 every year. (10-18 Uenokoen, Taito City)
