Venue | Ueno Toshogu Shrine |
Details | Ueno Toshogu Shrine was built in the grounds of Kan'ei-ji Temple by Todo Takatora and Sojo Tenkai in 1627 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu. The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1651 by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and is a valuable piece of architecture that has escaped damage from subsequent wars and earthquakes, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan along with the Karamon gate and lattice fence. The gorgeous interior of the shrine building, also known as the Golden Hall, is decorated with carvings of hawks and peonies, and the partition paintings by Kano Tan'yu, an official painter of the shogunate, have been preserved in their original state. The interior of the shrine building is usually closed to the public to protect the cultural property, but there will be a special opening for three days for 150 people only. |
