Main temple of Kiyomizucan’nondou Temple

Kiyomizu Kannon-dou Temple was used to be on a hill about 100m to the north called Mt.Suribachi-yama in Ueno Park, but it was reconstructed in 1694. The main temple contains 5 bays in length and 4 bays in width, Tansou-Irimoya-zukuri (Single-layer hip-and-gable roof), and Hon-kawarabuki(Roof with formal tiles). Especially, the stage facing the Shinobazu-no-ike pond became famous when it started to be painted in Ukiyo-e in Edo period. From 1990 to 1996, a full-scale restoration construction was conducted. During this construction, a sign was found which indicates that the reconstruction was done in 1694, while it was longly believed that it happened in 1696.
This temple is dedicated to Senju-Kannon Bosatsu(Thousand Armed Avalokiteshwara Bodhisattva) and is enshrined from Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It is placed in the miniature shrine and is rarely shown. It will be opened to the public on the first Horse Day Festival in February every year, and many people visit here. Kosodate-Kannon(Parenting Kannon) in secondary principal image is worshipped by those who have faith in beliefs related to children. There are many dolls offered as substitutes, wishing for their children’s healthy growth. On every 25th of September, a memorial service is done to the offered dolls.(continued in the lower column)
