Many temples of Toeizan Kaneiji Temple, which owned a magnificent amount of temple’s estate, were burnt down during the Ueno war in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate. Also, the Meiji government confiscated most of its estate. However, the reconstruction of Kaneiji Temple was recognized in 1879, and was reconstructed from Kita-in in Kawagoe as Konpon-chudou which used some materials of San-nai Honchidou Temple. Today, in the site area of 99,300 square meters, there still are the Kiyomizukan’nondou Temple which survived the turmoil, Front Gate of Honbo in Kaneiji Temple(Rin-nouji Temple), and Tokugawa Shogunate Mausoleum Gate Plaque, and are recognized as important cultural properties. Kiyomizukan’nondou Temple can be said as one of the very few main temple which Edo looks still remains.(continued in the lower column)

It is said that it might be a cannonball similar to an Armstrong cannon which Saga Domain owned at that time. A research by Saga University is taken place today.
The 15th shogun of Edo shogunate, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, was defeated in the battle of Toba-Fushimi and went back to Edo. Some discussions about the punishment of Yoshinobu was done between the Tousei-gun(The expeditionary force to the east) and court nobles, but the close associates appealed for mercy and he shut himself up in Mt.Ueno(Toeizan Kaneiji Temple) in 1868. In the morning of May 15th, 1868, the Tousei-gun led by Masujiro Ohmura attacked Mt.Ueno in full force.
The bodies of Shogi-tai soldiers(A pro-bakufu force) were cremated by the chief priest Butsuma and the others of Minowa Entsuji Temple. The small gravestone put in front of the Shogitai grave in Ueno Park is the one that was secretly buried by Kanshou-in of Kaneiji Temple and the chief priest of Gokoku-in Temple in 1869 and was later dug up from the ground. The big gravestone was made by Okisato Ogawa who used to be a member of the Shogi-tai in 1881. The word, “Shogi-tai” is not written since they were rebel armies of the government, but “Senshi no Haka (the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier)” is deeply engraved. It was recorded as the tangible cultural property of Taito City in 1990.
